Health & Safety for manufacturing & engineering

Machinery, chemicals and shift work bring serious risks. We help manufacturers control them in a way that works with production, not against it.

The risks we see most, and the rules behind them

  • Machinery and work equipment: guarding, isolation and maintenance under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)
  • Lifting equipment: cranes, hoists and lifting accessories, which need periodic thorough examination under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER)
  • Hazardous substances, fumes and dust: COSHH assessments, and local exhaust ventilation (LEV), which must be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months
  • Noise: the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set action values at 80 dB(A) and 85 dB(A)
  • Vibration from hand-held and powered tools
  • Workplace transport: forklifts, deliveries and pedestrian routes
  • Flammable substances and explosive atmospheres under DSEAR 2002
  • Manual handling and repetitive tasks

The HSE enforces health and safety in manufacturing, and it regularly runs inspection campaigns in the sector.

How we help

FAQs

Manufacturing questions

How often does our LEV need testing?

Local exhaust ventilation must be thoroughly examined and tested at least every 14 months, and more often for some processes. Day-to-day checks should also be in place.

Do we need ISO 45001?

It isn't a legal requirement, but many customers ask for it. If you're being asked, we can help you get ready.

Can you work around our shifts?

Yes. We plan visits and training around production so disruption is kept to a minimum.
