Health & Safety for offices & retail

Lower risk doesn't mean no risk. We keep things proportionate: the essentials done properly, with no box-ticking for its own sake.

The essentials for offices and shops

  • A fire risk assessment under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, with clear evacuation arrangements
  • Display screen equipment (DSE): workstation assessments for computer users, including home and hybrid workers, and eye tests on request
  • Work-related stress and wellbeing, assessed using the HSE Management Standards
  • First aid: a first aid needs assessment to decide what equipment and trained people you need
  • The workplace itself: temperature, lighting, welfare facilities, and slips and trips, under the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992
  • Manual handling of stock and deliveries
  • Lone working, violence and aggression, particularly in retail
  • Contractors working on your premises

In offices and shops, workplace health and safety is generally enforced by the local council's environmental health team.

How we help

FAQs

Office & retail questions

Do home workers need DSE assessments?

Yes, if they use display screen equipment regularly as part of their work. A practical self-assessment, backed by guidance, works well for most home and hybrid workers.

How many first aiders do we need?

There's no fixed number. It depends on a first aid needs assessment that considers your risks, staff numbers, shift patterns and location. We can help you work it out.

We're a small office. Do we really need all this?

You need the essentials, done properly and proportionately. For a small, low-risk office that's often simpler than people expect, and we'll keep it that way.
