The risks we see most
- Premises and equipment: stairs, gates, windows, furniture, toys and outdoor play equipment
- Fire and evacuation of very young children, including babies and children who can't walk
- Outings and trips away from the setting
- Hazardous substances: cleaning products stored and used safely around children
- Manual handling: staff lifting children, equipment and deliveries
- Food preparation and allergens in the kitchen
- Legionella in water systems
The rules that apply
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) statutory framework sets safeguarding and welfare requirements, including taking reasonable steps to keep children safe, having fire safety and evacuation procedures, and notifying Ofsted of serious accidents, illness or injury to a child. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires a fire risk assessment, and you have the usual workplace duties to your staff under health and safety law.
A balanced approach
Children learn through play, including some risky play. Good risk assessment isn't about removing every bump and scrape. It's about controlling the serious risks so children can explore safely. That's the balance we help you strike.
